Health, safety and the environment

The company takes the health and safety of all its people extremely seriously, together with respect for the environment, ethics and risk management.

Safety documents for chemical substances and / or their blends are extremely important for understanding potential dangers and how to safely handle products in the distribution chain.

They contain specific details about risks to health and the environment and comply with criteria set out by the EU (Regulation 1272/2008).

Also included are pertinent usage, physical and chemical properties, toxicological information and guidelines for safeguarding health and the environment.

The Safety Documents integrate the EC regulation 1907/2006 (REACH) as regards registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemical substances.

EC regulation 453/2010 provides a guide to how to complete these safety documents.

The main plants, ie the refineries in Falconara Marritima and Rome and the warehouses at Trecate and Savona are all certified ISO 14001 (Environmental Management systems) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series standards) in recognition of each site’s ability to safely manage its activities and of the consideration given to effects on the local territory. 

In fact, the Falconara site was the first in Italy and among the very first in Europe to be granted the certifications (in 2002). Building on this, the Falconara Marritima refinery introduced an Integrated Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Management System (SGI) that same year. This consists of a series of procedures, checks and monitoring which all contribute to a continuous improvement process geared towards safeguarding the environment.

The group also holds ISO 9001 Quality Management certification which recognises the constant improvements made to performance, efficiency and effectiveness by means of an approach which sets out objectives and ensures they are closely monitored and met.
